On Bidding for Contracts

There is a quote about when participating in a competitive bidding process that goes something like "The losers are wondering somethingorother, and the winner is wondering what he calculated wrong". I tried various searches here and on google and couldn't find anything, maybe someone who remembers more of the quote can develop this further? I would have created a stub, but this seems to vague to warrant it yet. -- matt at lackof org 2006/01/23

What about "The winners are planning their future, the losers are wondering about theirs." Found via Google Books Jodi.a.schneider 20:06, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
I have heard something like this before, but can't quite place it either. The basic idea is that the winning bidder will be the bidder who bids the lowest (i.e., will do the work for the least amount of money). If the winning bidder is just slightly below the next losing bidder, then they have calculated well, but if they are far below the next losing bidder, then they could have bid higher than they did and still won the contract. In that case, what the losing bidder is left wondering is which of the costs going into their bid they underestimated, to be able to charge that much less. BD2412 T 15:31, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

Thomas Jefferson

Sometimes It is Said that Man Connot be Trusted With the Government of Himself. Can He Then Be Trusted With the Government of Others?

The Spirit of Resistance to Government is So Valuable on Certain Occasions, That I Wish It to be Always Kept Alive.

When the Government Fears the People, There is Liberty; When the People Fear the Government, There is Tyranny

The policy of the American government is to leave its citizens free, neither restraining them nor aiding them in their pursuits.

The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

The general government will tend to monarchy, which will fortify itself from day to day, instead of working its own cures.

Cherish therefore the spirit of our people, and keep alive their attention. Do not be too severe upon their errors, but reclaim them by enlightening them. If once they become inattentive to the public affairs, you and I, and Congress, and Assemblies, judges and governors shall all become wolves....

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms [of government] those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. -- Bill for the More General diffusion of Knowledge (1778).

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. --- In "Commonplace Book," 1774-1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks. -- To Peter Carr, 1785. The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, (Memorial Edition) Lipscomb and Bergh, editors.

We established however some, although not all its [self-government] important principles . The constitutions of most of our States assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent, (as in electing their functionaries executive and legislative, and deciding by a jury of themselves, in all judiciary cases in which any fact is involved,) or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed. --- Thomas Jefferson to John Cartwright, 1824. Memorial Edition 16:45, Lipscomb and Bergh, editors.

For a people who are free, and who mean to remain so, a well organized and armed militia is their best security. -- Eighth Annual Message, November 8, 1808

Those who don't read the newspapers are better off than those who do insofar as those who know nothing are better off than those whose heads are filled with half-truths and lies.

One loves to possess arms, though they hope never to have occasion for them. --- Thomas Jefferson to George Washington, 1796. The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, (Memorial Edition) Lipscomb and Bergh

  • That's the difference between governments and individuals. Governments don't care, individuals do.

Patrick Henry

"Power is the great evil with which we are contending. We have divided power between three branches of government and erected checks and balances to prevent abuse of power. However, where is the check on the power of the judiciary? If we fail to check the power of the judiciary, I predict that we will eventually live under judicial tyranny." - Patrick Henry

the people have a right to keep and bear arms. -- Patrick Henry and George Mason, Elliot, Debates at 185.

Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands? -- Patrick Henry, 3 J. Elliot, Debates in the Several State Conventions 45, 2d ed. Philadelphia, 1836

The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able might have a gun. -- Patrick Henry, 3 Elliot, Debates at 386.

O sir, we should have fine times, indeed, if, to punish tyrants, it were only sufficient to assemble the people! Your arms, wherewith you could defend yourselves, are gone... Did you ever read of any revolution in a nation... inflicted by those who had no power at all? -- Patrick Henry, Elliot p. 3:50-53, in Virginia Ratifying Convention

Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are ruined. -- Patrick Henry, during Virginia's Convention to Ratify the Constitution (1788)

Have we the means of resisting disciplined armies, when our only defense, the militia, is put in the hands of Congress? Of what service would militia be to you when, most probably, you will not have a single musket in the state? For, as arms are to be provided by Congress, they may or may not provide them. -- Patrick Henry, 3 Elliot Debates at 48

If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military, the hired servants of our rulers. Only the government --and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws. -- Edward Abbey in Abbey's Road, p.39 (Plume, 1979)

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom—go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen! - Samuel Adams

If we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom. - Samuel Adams

All that is essential for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. -- Edmund Burke

What Good Fortune It is For Governments That People Do Not Think - Adolf Hitler

Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty...of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers. John Jay, First Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. -- Abraham Lincoln

No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation. -- General Douglas MacArthur

If we will not be governed by God, then we will be ruled by tyrants. - William Penn

It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong. -- Voltaire, 1764

Without either the first or second amendment, we would have no liberty; the first allows us to find out what's happening, the second allows us to do something about it! The second will be taken away first, followed by the first and then the rest of our freedoms. -- Andrew Ford

On April 18, 1775 John Adams and John Hancock were at the home of Rev. Jonas Clarke, a Lexington pastor and militia leader. That same night Paul Revere arrived to warn them of the approaching Redcoats. The next morning British Major Pitcairn shouted to an assembled regiment of Minutemen; "Disperse, ye villains, lay down your arms in the name of George the Sovereign King of England." The immediate response of Rev. Jonas Clarke or one of his company was: "We recognize no Sovereign but God and no King but Jesus." The motto of the American Revolution became “No King but King Jesus”

This country belongs to the people and whenever they shall grow weary of their government they can exercise their constitutional right to amend it, or revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it. -- Abraham Lincoln

If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege. -- Wilson v. State, 33 Ark. 557, 560 (1878)

The militia is a voluntary force not associated or under the control of the States except when called out; [ when called into actual service] a permanent or long standing force would be entirely different in make-up and call. -- Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Paper No. 28

I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials. -- George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 425-426.

An instance within the memory of some of this house will show us how our militia may be destroyed. Forty years ago, when the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliment was advised by an artful man, who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that is was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually, by totally disusing and neglecting the militia. -- George Mason at the Virginia Ratification Convention, June 14, 1788

Whereas, to preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them; nor does it follow from this, that all promiscuously must go into actual service on every occasion. The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle; and when we see many men disposed to practice upon it, whenever they can prevail, no wonder true republicans are for carefully guarding against it. -- Richard Henry Lee, The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.

A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves...and include all men capable of bearing arms. -- Richard Henry Lee, Additional Letters from the Federal Farmer (1788) at 169.

The militia is the natural defense of a free country against foreign invasions, domestic insurrections, and domestic usurpations of power by rulers. The right of citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered as the palladium of liberties of the republic, since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers, and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the U.S., Book III at 746 (1833)

What, Sir, is the use of a militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty .... Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins. -- Representative Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, spoken during floor debate over the Second Amendment, I Annals of Congress at 750, August 17, 1789

The power of the sword, say the minority of Pennsylvania, is in the hands of Congress. My friends and countrymen, it is not so, for the powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American...[T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it ever will remain, in the hands of the people. -- Tench Coxe in the Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.

God-sized hole

  • The quote goes something like "There is a god-sized hole in man's psyche." It's almost always attributed to Sartre, but I can't find anywhere that says where he said it or wrote it, or what the original french was.

A first attempt at an answer: Regarding the attribution of the “God-sized hole” as coming from Sartre. After a non-exhaustive search in both English and French, I found a couple of plausible sources that make the attribution problematic. Here are my quick (and most definitely not authoritative) translations, followed by the original texts pasted from the internet sources.

On Wikipedia (French) (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Paul_Sartre)

«Man is defined by consciousness [conscience] (the for-self that is opposed to the in-self). For all consciousness is the consciousness of something (the idea of intentionality, taken up from Husserl). Man is therefore fundamentally open to the world, “incomplete,” “turned towards,” existing [existent] (projected outside the self): there is in him a nothingness, a “hole in the being” susceptible to receiving objects from the world. Consciousness is that which never coincides with oneself, that which is the power of [making]-nothingness [nihilism?] (that is to say negation, that is to say action) thanks to the imagination (which can think that which does not exist). Consciousness makes the project possible.»

«I asked myself every minute what I could be in the eyes of God. At present, I do not know the answer. God does not see me, God does not hear me, God does not know me. You see that emptiness [space, vacuum] above our heads? This is God again. Silence is God. Absence is God. God is the solitude of men. There was only me: I alone have decided [about] Evil; alone I invented Good. It is I who have cheated, I who have performed miracles, it is I who accuses [condemns] myself today, I alone who can absolve myself; myself, man. If God exists, man is nothingness.»

  • See The Yale Book of Quotations, page 584, for the source of this expression in Pascal.

Fred R. Shapiro, Editor, The Yale Book of Quotations.

I have seen this attributed to Augustine and Tolstoy as well. 17:08, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

It comes, in fact, from Pascal: "Qu'est-ce donc que nous crie cette avidité et cette impuissance sinon qu'il y a eu autrefois dans l'homme un véritable bonheur, dont il ne lui reste maintenant que la marque et la trace toute vide et qu'il essaye inutilement de remplir de tout ce qui l'environne, recherchant des choses absentes le secours qu'il n'obtient pas des présentes, mais qui en sont toutes incapables parce que ce gouffre infini ne peut être rempli que par un objet infini et immuable, c'est-à-dire que par Dieu même." (pensee 425)

"To know me is to love me" - Unknown

Can someone PLEASE find out who came up with this beauty: "To know me is to love me". I am done searching google and wikipedia and now I see that it's not even on WikiQuote! Ò-RFW

-There is, I believe, a country song which includes the lines "To know me is to love me, I must be a hell of a man/Oh Lord, it's hard to be humble, but I'm doing the best that I can" 18:52, 19 October 2006 (UTC) PS: I Googled the couplet I just posted, and came up with this: Mac Davis - It's Hard To Be Humble

-Seems good. I always suspected it was by someone like Plato, but, given that there's very little on google, and your reference is a case where the quote was PUBLISHED, I'd say it'll have to do. THANK YOU -RFW

Mac Davis's 1980 song (from the album of the same name) can't be the original use of this phrase. I believe it was already well-established when Phil Spector used a variation as the title and theme of "To Know Him Is to Love Him", a song made popular by The Teddy Bears in 1958. I suspect it's much older than this. We'll have to keep looking. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 21:04, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
There are two early near-misses by Robert Burns. One is from his "Ae Fond Kiss" (1791):
But to see her was to love her,
Love but her, and love for ever.
The other, almost identical, is from "Bonnie Lesley" (1792):
To see her is to love her
And love but her for ever.
But Samuel Rogers got it pretty well exactly in his Jacqueline (1814):
Oh! she was good as she was fair.
None - none on earth above her!
As pure in thought as angels are,
To know her was to love her.
Antiquary 22:29, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
Thank-you very much for that useful research. However, if you are new to the phrase -- 'To know me is to love me' -- its current meaning seems to be "If you don't love me / like me, then you obviously don't know me / understand me" or that is to say "I may not be very likeable on the outside, but if you knew me, you'd like me". Unfortunately, none of your quotations touch on that meaning. Furthermore, there's currently nothing to suggest that the phrase found its origins in those quotations. Wildly interesting though, and I'm so glad you shared them. :) 18:40, 1 December 2006 (UTC) RFW

-On the near-misses with "see her", Thomas Ford is an earlier source than Burns, known to Australians thanks to Robert Menzies:

At a function attended by the Queen at Parliament House, Canberra, in 1963, Menzies quoted the Elizabethan poet Thomas Ford, "I did but see her passing by, and yet I love her till I die".

Maltese Proverbs

I've recently found out that there are some working on translating wikipedia into Maltese, so it hink it woulb be possible to write a list of both Maltese proverbs and idioms. The Maltese language is rich in proverbs and idioms, and from this aspect it is, in my opinion, one of the nicest languages. Anyway, if some decides to start a page with Maltese proverbs, I'll be glad to help. Keith Azzopardi 14:37, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Wylands First Law of Automation

David C. Wyland, a Silicon Valley engineer, remarking on the evils of excessive automation:

Anything that can be done for you, automatically, can be done to you, automatically.

Alas, I can't point to an online reference for Wylands Law. Regardless, I think his Law is worthwhile in the same vein as Parkinsons Law, or the Peter Principle.

Gawbl 22:33, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Here's an online reference from a famous BYTE columnist (and science fiction author):
  • Anything that can be automatically done for you can be automatically done to you.
Since we don't seem to have concrete information on Wyland himself, I have created a stub theme article, Automation, and added it there. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:34, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Thank-you. I'm obliged to add a disclaimer here: The email you reference was written by my brother, and we learned about Wylands Law from the same father. :-) If that's O.K., I will invite Mr. Wyland to visit your Automation page and add comments into the 'talk' section. Gawbl 00:30, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm. I hadn't read the page carefully enough. I was thinking Pournelle quoted it, but I see that it was actually quoted by the mail-writer you mention. I'm troubled by the level of indirection here, especially since the source is not a Chaos Manor column, over which Pournelle has editorial authority and responsibility for content, but rather a letter with no provenance for determining factual accuracy. (Not that I'm saying your brother is incorrect; it's a matter of verifiability through reliable sources.) I'm afraid we need to get better sources. Thanks for calling attention to this. Any additional information you can obtain may be useful in helping us track this down. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 00:58, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
I'll do my best to reach Mr. Wyland. Gawbl 01:22, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
I spoke with Mr. Wyland by telephone yesterday; he seemed pleased that his Law might earn him some fame (or, perhaps, notoriety). I sent him some Wikiquote URLs and invited him to comment. In response, he emailed me a document "WYLAWS.DOC" that he claimed was dated 1993; it's about 5K in size, includes the Law of Automation, and some other interesting adages, like the "Law of Time to Market: Good now beats better later." Also: "John Byram's Law of Learning Sequence: You can't come back from where you haven't been." While it's all very amusing, I don't think any of this truly verifies anything. :-( Gawbl 23:21, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Michael Scott: The most sacred thing I do is care... Today I am in charge of picking a great new healthcare plan. Right? That's what this is all about. Does that make me their doctor? Um, yes. Like a specialist.

Dwight Schrute: Through concentration, I can raise and lower my cholesterol at will. Pam Beesley: Why would you wanna raise your cholesterol? Dwight Schrute: So I can lower it.

Dwight Schrute: The purse girl hits everything on my checklist: creamy skin, straight teeth, curly hair, amazing breasts. Not for me... for my children. The Schrutes produce very thirsty babies.

Nikki Hornsby Quotes that are called "Nikkisms"

Inside all of Nikki Hornsby's commerically released music CDs is a quote she wrote years ago that should be in the Wikiquote webpage.

"I'll never touch a cloud with my fingertips but that doesn't mean I shouldn't try!".

Please add

Thank you, CJP Staff

Another one Nikki wrote in college as a Psych & Theology Major is: "I see the faults that make us human and cry from pure joy that we are"

One more that she wrote when she was in grade school: "I'd rather face the consequences of the truth, than the reprocussions of a lie"

Here are two links to those "NIKKISMS" that can be easily found online:

"When you get close, close enough to read the label on his uniform, close enough to smell his aftershave, then every step he takes is one you have allowed him to take, every decision he makes is one you have allowed him to make."

Public sector management quotes

A trap for young players in public sector management is not knowing what the games are that are being played. D.Fauchelle

No generalisation is ever entirely correct -- including this one.

Until I discovered wikiquote yesterday -- looking up Robert A. Heinlein -- I believed that this quote was attributed to Sir Winston Churchill.

Not only wasn't it Churchill, searching for "generalisation" didn't yield this quotation, either; hence my request for an entry and hopefully, an attribution.

"The will to win means nothing with out the will to prepare."

From Wikipedia:Juma Ikangaa (born July 19, 1957) is a world-class marathon runner from Tanzania, a sentimental favorite in Boston after finishing second three years in a row at the Boston Marathon from 1988-1990. A great trainer, Ikangaa said "The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare."

Something is not quite right here. There are at least two books that were published before the birth date given for Ikangaa above that include the essential sentiment expressed in the quote, according to Google Book Search:
  • The will to win. We hear a lot about that. The will and the wish to win, but there isn't a chance for either one of them to be gratified or to have any value unless there has been a will to prepare to win…
  • It is all right to talk about this "will to win", but I tell you it is not of much worth unless you have the will to prepare
    • Quotee not identified in limited GBS result; quoted in Barnwell, Mary Gaston (1943). The Barnwell Addresses. The Central High School. pp. p. 369.
Either Ikangaa was born much earlier or someone said this before he was credited with saying it. Unfortunately, the limited GBS views for these books doesn't show the complete quote and quotee, so more work is needed to lock this quote down. If the eventually confirmed quotee doesn't already have an article and doesn't seem to merit one just for this quote, we should probably put it into Winnning or Victory. By the way, I've also raised this issue at w:Talk:Juma Ikangaa#Will to prepare. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 08:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Bill Wiseman

  • The only thing that is truly consistent is inconsistancy.
Who is Bill Wiseman? Anyone has a link to what makes him notable? ~ MosheZadka (Talk) 2 July 2005 07:07 (UTC)

I *believe* that Bill Wiseman is simply a psudonym. Bill being a rather common name, "wise" and "man" being put togeather to make it seem like an actual name. I may be wrong.

Not so a psudonym. The saying was an apothegm uttered by Bill Wiseman, a Vice President of United Artists Broadcasting, during a meeting in New York City regarding the new television station in Cleveland Ohio, Channel 43.

  • I can not find support for the Wiseman quote. I did find the following:
    • "If inconsistency is a mark of a great mind then this Nation must have the brainiest people that ever lived; for the only thing I find consistent is inconsistency".
  • This is from a 1966 hearing of the U.S. House Committee on Armed Services, (page 5528 of the transcript), but the author is not discernible from the Google Books snippet. BD2412 T 03:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Gethsemane Exchange

The book of Mark (New Testament), talk about "certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and the young man laid hold on him: and he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked"(Mr.14.51-52).

Hours before, the Last Supper was celebrated with one of the disciples leaning on Jesus bosom "whom Jesus loved" (Jn.13.23).

In Da Vinci's The Last Supper,"the figure to the left of Christ, also wearing blue and red, is ussually identified as John the Apostle,...who is identified to be the disciple whom Jesus loved seated next to Jesus and who was customarily depicted...as a beardless, often "effeminate" youth with very long hair...Some speculetors, have entertained the idea that John was depected in this way to hint that he was Mary Magda- lene...".

In the book of John, Jesus "saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom Jesus loved" and said "unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!. Then saith he to the disciple, behold thy mother!"(Jn.19.26-27).Three mysteries apparently not related! But what if Jesus delivered himself in the garden of Gethsemanee in exchange for the beloved disciple (with the help of Judas who's task would be to lead the herodian guards along with the pharisees, the kidnappers of John? That would explain the presence of this strange character in this not untipically, not unusual "scenario". It could also explain why Jesus was the only "arrested one" at that time as "nego- tiated"! (given the assumption). It could also explain the possible absence of the "beloved disciple" from the Last Supper being substituted by Mary Magdalene.

Finally, it could give us a hint of Jesus motive for his final words adressed to "his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved"(Jn.19.26) when he said unto them: "Woman, behold thy (recovered) son!... and son, "Behold thy mother"

Found this quote:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to slide across the finish line broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out, leaking oil, and shouting GERONIMO!!!"

No matter where I look, I see it attributed to 'Bill McKenna in Cycle Magazine, February 1982.' Sounds legit, but there are no other mentions of a Bill McKenna anywhere else on the internets. Seems dubious, but would love to know for sure.

Live simply that others might simply live

I would like to request that the quote "Live simply that others might simply live" be added with attibution. I seem to find that it is attributed to St. Elizabeth Seton. However, a very similar quote is attributed to Mohandas Ghandi. Does someone know the history of this?

  • The earliest reference I can find on Google Books is a pair of 1977 examples, one attributed to Seton, the other unattributed but written by Leslie Glenn. BD2412 T 21:05, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
One of those references reads "This is a recent rendition of Elizabeth Seton's statement 'Live simply that others may simply live.' It is referring to this quote:
  • The rich must live more simply that the poor may simply live.
    • Charles Birch, "Creation, Technology, and Human Surval: Called to Replenish the Earth", Ecumenical Review 28:66 (Jan 1976), presented at the WCC assembly, Nov. 1975.
I hypothesize that Birch's quote is actually the original and that the attributions of similar quotes to Seton and Gandhi are mistaken. I'm on the road right now, with limited internet access, so I haven't been able to thoroughly check this out, but I haven't found any similar quotes before Birch's, with the possible exception of this, which is apparently an undated pamphlet "circa 1974", but I bet it's actually from 1976 or later. --KHirsch 23:15, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Ricky Gervais

I have seen a quote by him misattributed to Steve Carell and others many times across the web. It's ridiculous that there's no page for him on here, all there is is The Ricky Gervais Show and its related pages, which doesn't list his personal quotes, just what he, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington said together on the show. I honestly believe that the lack of a personal page for Ricky Gervais is causing this quote to be misattributed way more than it would be if this were fixed.

This is where I usually go to verify quotes and the quote wasn't here because the place to enter it doesn't exist. That sucks. Ricky Gervais probably says a bunch of funny and insightful stuff on his own, when he's not on the show. Because there is no Ricky Gervais page, none of that stuff is on this site. How does he not have his own page?

Anyway, here's the quote:

“Steve Carell has quoted Ricky Gervais as saying, ‘If you don’t know a Michael Scott, then you are a Michael Scott,’ ”
-quote from this New York Magazine article

It's a pretty good quote, and it's a shame that this is the only place it's printed on Wikiquote.

I would Be bold and put it up myself, but I want to avoid stepping on anyone's toes. I haven't kept track of the procedures and history around here enough to do more than put this request up. If no one responds to me in a few weeks I'll consider that my go-ahead and I'll do it myself.

Knowledge without thought is simply plagiarism. No one person can claim wisdom without the cognitive process of discovery for oneself. To simply read and book or an article and regurgitate its' contents back at a later date is neither wisdom nor intelligence but merely the sign of a good memory. Challenge that which is presented as empirical. To limit ones education to that which is presented only by anothers experience does nothing for the advancement of true and pure knowledge.

Law easily broken by powerful

I believe I read many years ago, in a law course I was studying: that Solon about 500BC said, words to the (old memory) effect of "The Law is like a spider's web, catch small flies, as big ones break them before your eyes.

Another said, the law is a ass.

You may have and authority memory jogged by my request, as I couldn't find it by search under Solon or the law etc. Or someone may wish to create an article to include the many historic quotes about law, laws and enforcement of them.-- 01:24, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

I went back to Wikipedia and searching found this quote in part attributed to Anacharsis as stating from a Solon idea? However I do think my memory from Uni has better quoted the translation, as above. "Having been informed that Solon was employed to draw up a code of laws for the Athenians, Anacharsis described his occupation, saying:

"Laws are spider-webs, which catch the little flies, but cannot hold the big ones."[11"-- 01:54, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikisource says:- Solon was the first to call the 30th day of the month the Old-and-New day, and to institute meetings of the nine archons for private conference, as stated by Apollodorus in the second book of his work On Legislators. When civil strife began, he did not take sides with those in the city, nor with the plain, nor yet with-the coast section.

One of his sayings is: Speech is the mirror of action; and another that the strongest and most capable is king. He compared laws to spiders' webs, which stand firm when any light and yielding object falls upon them, while a larger thing breaks through them and makes off. Secrecy he called the seal of speech, and occasion the seal of secrecy.

"compared laws to spiders' webs, which stand firm when any light and yielding object falls upon them, while a larger thing breaks through them and makes off."-- 02:01, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

" For a man who saw a Tsunami, cyclones are only a dust" -Mohamed Rasik

Quote from Tamil

When you are alone, don't stand in front of a mirror; it will start speaking about yourself.

Always remember that you are no more a child when you need something.

Don't forget the past, it helps in shaping the future.

May be you are a genius, bet let me know do u forgive?.

The one who doesn't know anything will try to showoff.

Ask the wisdom how to be humble.

I am alone, so i am hungry.

Hunger doesn't know any taste.

Rookie Blue Quotes

Please can someone please put all the Rookie Blue Quotes up. Some are really funny.

"I have your letter before me. Soon it will be behind me."

Who wrote: "Dear sir, I am seated in the smallest room of my house. I have your letter before me. Soon it will be behind me." Was it Voltaire? Max Reger?

In 1786 William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland wrote a letter to his friend John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich telling him that he was withdrawing his political support from Sandwich and going over to the other side. Sandwich wrote in reply, "Sir, your letter is before me, and it will presently be behind me. I remain, sir, your most humble servant." Source: Sir Nathaniel William Wraxall Historical Memoirs of My Own Time (1815; repr, London: Bickers, 1884) vol. 1, p. 399. — CAWylie (talk) 14:36, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Bismarck - English

However much we may profess to despise the English, we are all flattered to be mistaken for one! Is this quotation right?

source for: "Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel"

"Never pick a fight with a man who buys ink by the barrel" has been attributed to Mark Twain, but also to a politician in 1964.

The earliest usage I could find in print was:
  • My friend Reg Murphy, now publisher of the Baltimore Sun, has a sign behind his desk advising those who would take on the press that it is never wise to do battle with anyone who buys ink by the barrel.
    • Griffin B. Bell, Ronald J. Ostrow, Taking Care of The Law (1982), p. 205.
There are some books of quotations from shortly after that time which include the quote and credit it as anonymous. Cheers! BD2412 T 16:51, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa's Quotes

The page to fill out: Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa (w:Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa)

One book that caught my attention: Indaba, My Children

An excerpt from its introduction (full paragraphs 1, 2, and 5 on page xix):

"There is a saying dear to lawyers that justice cannot be founded on lies, and I think the same is true with human association and mutual trust and understanding. A marriage of persons who fear and distrust each other cannot long survive, nor can one where the partners hold false ideas about each other.
The same is true between races in any country. There can be no real understanding between them so long as neither has a clear picture of the other: what it really thinks, believes in, hopes for, and why. You cannot found friendship on faulty guesswork because guessing breeds suspicion, hate, and bloodshed. And there is much that is guesswork between Black and White. Many of the so-called problems facing today can be traced back to foolish acts on the part of one or other of the two races in the past: acts that were the result of lack of understanding. Only by being presented with a full, clear and unvarnished picture of the African - seen from his worst as well as his best side - can the White man hope to avoid repeating the incredible mistakes he made in the past, blunders that have cost Africa a lot of suffering and close to three million human lives in the short space of ten years.
So great is the lack of understanding between Black and White in Africa that there are White men who refuse to accept the fact that a Black man is a human being like the Indian, the Coloured, the Chinese and the European himself. They would rather die than accept the fact that there are Black artists, sculptors, builders, teachers and the like. These people believe nothing else about Africans but that they are lazy, stupid, stubborn creatures, something between an ape and a human being. In my travels through South Africa and beyond, I have met hundreds of such White men and women."

<ref>Conquer yourself</ref>“You should not worry when others don’t understand you, instead when, you don’t understand yourself”, once correctly remarked by a great personality. When we try to define ‘SELF’ along with the values that we uphold, we usually come across a related term success. Conquering oneself is like crossing one’s escape velocity after which all the efforts turn into perfection. For a person to be successful, analytical mind, observing nature, patience sustenance and out of box thinking are essential traits. Altogether, these qualities creates a magic wand…One have to recognise innate talent and capabilities for setting up personal goals, to be followed by determination and preservation. It can be achieved through self introspection and monitoring. One can observe oneself and record thoughts occupying predominantly during wakeful hours which in turn influence one’s actions subconsciously. It will develop great confidence and conviction in decisions as one move ahead. That’s all what is required for an accomplished living. The thing that is even worse than quitting or failing is being complacent and underestimation of one’s abilities. “I can’t do it”, these are the worlds four most dangerous words which have to be replaced by “I will do it”. These four incanted words are not a thought process but a strong belief that can lead to development of successful personality which in turn can develop attitude. We must hold on long enough to make our dreams come true because often times the path to success is a long road and for that it is important to stick to what is true and flick a toggle switch of our courage, efforts and talent. We need to wake up, know our limits and talent. After retrospection about these features, one should set an achievable aim for oneself and think beyond unimpeachable. It’s not necessary to hit the bull’s eye, but it is mandatory to go for it if we need unmitigated success. We must quash all the shortcuts and past failure to reach an unprecedented and unrelenting aim. Success starts when one starts finding oneself, so always try to polish and chisel till one get it perfect.

After knowing oneself even if one fail, their efforts are revitalised and quantised like a bowman pulling out arrow from his quiver that is revived after being suppressed once. Instead of thinking about the times of failure, one should think of finding new ways to achieve one’s aim where every effort must be biddably coupled after every step of failure. We should think of every positive experience and outcome of life and see how they add up. Trust in one’s capabilities and calibre can help to entrench one’s effort more enthusiastically and self sufficiently.

Keeping all these things in mind, never allow your confidence to go beyond limits, because after that it will converge into a devil called “overconfidence” that will degrade one’s calibre and lengthen the path to success. So after having faith and belief in oneself, one can expect others to believe in them. After every step towards achievement of goal, will make us more happier than ever before.

During the journey of life, walking through the pathway of time, days come and pass by. Things will happen and even the biggest of them will get to sit down and give way to life, for it is to proceed. Leveling all hurdles, life continues to advance, till the moment which is discerned. Eventually all settles down, and there you are, starting another journey of another life. (Ali Asif) <ref>Originally my personal Quote</ref>

There's a quote I read many many years ago, and I cannot for the life of me remember it. All that comes to mind is, "....over the bleached bones of your rivals..." At least I'm fairly sure it went something like that. Does anyone know which quote I'm talking about, and knows the entire thing? It's pretty long, I'm sorry I don't have more info to go off of. Any info is greatly appreciated.

"...evolution is an infinitely variable development of learning and cognition as well as of the acquisition of true love, knowledge and wisdom. And this process is granted to all coarse-matter life forms, as well as to all the domains of the spirit forms in their pure spirit-energy levels." Billy, Contact Report 228, May 1989

And the keystone of my thoughts is that the whole splendor of the world and the universe creates infinitely much joy, happiness and harmony within me in such a way that I linger in highest respect for the tremendous Creational display of splendor and love in reverential, silent devotion. Billy, Silent Devotion, 23rd January, 2005

True love, namely, surpasses all love which is thought-feeling generated, which, as a rule, only exhausts itself in degenerated emotions. Billy, A Little Bit of Knowledge, Sense, and Wisdom

What is so bad about becoming old then? Aging is not important, but rather how and what the human lives, what he makes out of his life, what good and positive as well as humane things he does and what he does in regard to being a human, how high he develops his consciousness, how positive and good he is, how he associates with the fauna and flora and how he treats, values, reveres and loves his fellow human. Therefore, what matters to the human is, in fact, not so much how long he walks the earth because what counts is all that which he achieves and accomplishes during his existence. Billy, Aging

Clarence Edward Scotton

Was born the oldest of four children on December 10, 1969 in his family barn on a small farm in Templeville, MD. His mother was Hilda Doris Cahall and his father was Clarence Howard Scotton Jr. He has a Sister, Melinda Michelle Vice, and two brothers, Clarence Howard Scotton III and William Scotton. Raised by his grandparents to be Druid/Christian, Clarence E. Scotton was a novice reader and an accomplished athlete. By the age of 12 he had already obtained his first degree black belt in tae kwon do and an Eagle Scout in the Royal Rangers. By age fifteen Clarence Scotton had begun a life of crime with the high jacking of a police helicopter and taking it for a joy ride. It wasn’t until after his punishment that he learned about making life changes. Clarence Scotton was a little bit of a slow learner. He ran the streets of Washington D.C. in search of adventure but all he found was trouble. The Army saved him from the streets and himself. For sixteen years he studied and mastered Engineering and War. Clarence Scotton got to see the world, experience her various and wonderful cultures, and even make a few friends along the way. During his tours he served as a Material Fabrication Specialist and Chief Ballistics Inspector. Clarence Scotton created machines that saved a lot of people and he received a lot of military and civilian recognition for it. Half way through his fifth tour and while in Iraq, he survived his third explosion. Shortly after completing a twelve-month tour he was diagnosed with a concussion and his left hand and arm begun to fail. Clarence Scotton was transferred from Ft Dix, NJ to Tucson, AZ VA hospital for physical therapy and neurology. As the concussion worsened, he became a quadriplegic. He underwent several operations to have the necrotic brain tissue removed and the good tissue cauterized. In the end, he had a quarter of his left temporal brain tissue removed due to bruising caused by trauma. Clarence Scotton was told he would never be fully functional again and so he fell into depression. Clarence Scotton would spend the next six years relearning how to feed himself, walk and talk. However, that was not the bad news, the crushing blow came when the army honorably and medically retired him on January 1, 2007 with sixteen years and five tours. Anxiety over came him and he almost gave up. However, as he recovered Clarence Scotton continued to help his fellow soldiers by volunteering and advocating at the VA hospital. He once again felt needed and, with the support of a Tens Unit, he slowly became mobile again. Clarence Scotton realized it was time for another life changing decision; so as soon as he was able, he took a walk. Clarence Scotton joined a hiking group and together they followed the Louis and Clark Expedition trail from Seattle, WA to Vancouver, Canada. After venturing off the path and reaching a polar shelf some 300 miles south of the North Pole, wrestling an Elk and dodging the Canadian Mounties, Clarence Scotton returned to Tucson, AZ where God gave him the idea of helping soldiers with transportation by receiving donated cars, fixing them, and then giving them away to vets in need.

In 2008, homeless and financially poor, Clarence Scotton became the founding father of a nonprofit organization called “Cars4Vets.” This organization would grow into a national gift giving system that produced a multitude of resources for the veteran population. By 2010 Cars4Vets had open an automotive trade school, supported a transportation museum, a television talk show, a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, a magazine titled “REV”, (Remembering Every Veteran) and scores of auto mechanic shops who catered to the needs of veterans by offering FREE roadside assistance and discount parts and labor. By the winter of 2010 Clarence Scotton was pinned “Honorary Marine” for going above and beyond the call of duty in support of the Marine Corp values. In February of 2012, with the help of electric shock therapy, he was fully released from medical care as 80% disabled and by the summer of 2012 Clarence Scotton, the Founder, President and CEO of Cars4Vets, stepped down from his Emporia position and fully retired to San Diego, CA.

His parents and grandparents are deceased. His sister, brothers and their children have all begun their own lives. So it was time to make another life changing decision. Clarence Scotton bought a sail boat and sailed the South Pacific. While sailing he wrote his first short story called “The Book of Edward” part I. Clarence Scotton is currently working on the second half of “The Book of Edward” part II. He's also a Reverend, a Certified National Medical Assistant, an investor, a certified television production producer, an actor and a director, and holds two doctorates in Psychology and Metaphysics, but most importantly, he's a volunteer. You can “Google” his name to read about his community service record or “Youtube” Clarence Scotton to subscribe to his latest videos. After signing on to Concorde Career College to become a Medical Assistant, he became a student ambassador and a member of the AMT. He made the Dean’s List four or five times, and became a Certified Medical Assistant in 2016. Be brave and make the change. Along with his military career, Clarence Scotton has lived a very exciting life. He has survived three explosions so far. He's been shot 4 times, stabbed, tortured and impaled. Had he not accepted change, these obstacles would have become road blocks. Clarence Scotton took a dream, turned it into a goal and held on to it with both hands and white knuckles. He is living proof that one person can make a difference. His next five-year plan is to complete “The Book of Edward” saga, become a Registered Medical Assistant and to continue his education in holistic medicine. Life is full of changes. His favorite quote is, “If you don’t like how something works or feels, change it.” (Denzel Washington, 1993) Clarence Scotton was having lunch with John McCain one afternoon and during a talk about “Cars4Vets” he gave Clarence something of inspiration. He said, "The passive life is not worth forgoing the deep satisfaction, it is the self-respect that comes from employing all the blessings God has bestowed on you to leave the world better for your presence in it." All of you will eventually face a choice between passively reaping the benefits of living in America and working to contribute meaningfully to its advancement. I encourage you to use your good fortune to make a difference in the lives of others and in their country. I challenge each and every one of you to not just follow your dreams but to go beyond and let the world be your playground. For more of Clarence Scotton good works feel free to Google Clarence Scotton or look up Clarence Scotton on Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube.com.

The Mysterious "Charles J.C. Lyall"

Google comes up with practically zilch on this aphorist(?) who appears in ancient Murphy's quotelists, e.g. this. His quotes are also referenced in Stephen Spanoudis's site from 1994, the earliest I could find.

  • Feminist theologians tell us that God is female. But, what about the devil? What about her?
  • Never tell an accountant that he is a credit to his profession. A good accountant is a debit to his profession.
  • When a person says that technology is "out of control", he usually means that it is out of his control. This is usually a good thing.
  • A cynic is a person who refuses to share your illusions.
  • The road to affluence is paved with good inventions
  • Lyall's Regret: Waist not, diet not.

As these quotes are certainly out of character with Arabic scholar C.J. Lyall or any others on the disambiguation pages, this is now linked to the anonymous section of Wikiquote unless revelations abound.--Lmstearn (talk) 04:55, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

Did you check the RME files [...DOS/HOME/MURPHY] that accompany the quotelist referenced in your link? They contain an address dated June 1993 for the Charles J. C. Lyall who wrote and distributed the C program which displayed the accompanying aphorism files. At that time he lived in Alberta, Canada. I used to run his program back in the "DOS Days" but have no other information about him. Shirley Powell (talk) 17:49, 1 August 2019 (UTC)

True joy of nature is when every drop of water shines like a pearl

Quotes from Frederic Leighton, 1st Baron Leighton

  • "...sincerity is the well-spring of all lasting achievement, and that no good thing ever took root in untruth or self-deception."
  • "...if every excellent work is stamped with the personality of its author, no work can be enduring that is stamped with a borrowed stamp; and that, therefore, their first duty is to see that the thoughts, the emotions, the impressions they fix on he canvas are in very truth their own thoughts, their own emotions, their own spontaneous impressions, and not those of others."
  • "...work that does not spring from the heart has no roots, and will of certainty wither and perish."
  • "... true genius knows no hurry, that patience is of its essence, and thoroughness its constant mark."
  • "...the gathered experience of past ages is a precious heritage and not an irksome load; and that nothing will fortify them better for the future, and free development, than the reverent and loving study of the past."
  • "Extreme youth when it is healthy is bold and fearless, and not a little inclined to rebel against tradition, however rooted in the long assent of men."

Full text:
"Looking from a wide standpoint at this exhibition and embracing further in the field of vision the many and manifold exhibitions, especially of paintings, which each season brings forth; struck as we all must be, deeply with the vehement and almost feverish strife of conflicting theories and opinions which is rife about us, it is impossible not to feel how perplexing such a condition of things must be to the very young, who, on the outer threshold of their career, eager and still malleable, seek a secure path in such a labyrinth of contradictions. Extreme youth when it is healthy is bold and fearless, and not a little inclined to rebel against tradition, however rooted in the long assent of men. And here, gentlemen, I would not be misunderstood. Steeped as I am to my innermost marrow in reverence for the mighty men of the past to whom Art owes whatever true sublimity it boasts; convinced, unshakably, of the vital validity of the great principles on which their achievements rest, I am yet not one of those who would refuse to Art all power of evolution, or who believe that, though assuredly it will never reach more lofty summits, it may not send forth lateral green shoots fresh and delightful as only they are, indeed, nourished from the strong sap of the parent stem.

In brief, I do not believe - to change the metaphor - that they who, in our time, have wedded their lives to art have clasped to their breasts a lovely but lifeless corpse. To the very young then, I would fain offer one or two matters for thought, if, perchance, they will hearken to one who has grown old in unwavering sympathy with their struggles and doubts. I would beg them to keep ever before their eyes the vital truth that sincerity is the well-spring of all lasting achievement, and that no good thing ever took root in untruth or self-deception. I would urge them to remember that if every excellent work is stamped with the personality of its author, no work can be enduring that is stamped with a borrowed stamp; and that, therefore, their first duty is to see that the thoughts, the emotions, the impressions they fix on he canvas are in very truth their own thoughts, their own emotions, their own spontaneous impressions, and not those of others: for work that does not spring from the heart has no roots, and will of certainty wither and perish. The other maxim also I would urge on them - that true genius knows no hurry, that patience is of its essence, and thoroughness its constant mark; and, lastly, I would ask them to believe that the gathered experience of past ages is a precious heritage and not an irksome load; and that nothing will fortify them better for the future, and free development, than the reverent and loving study of the past."

A lottery is a tax on stupidity (or on people who are bad at math)

Does anyone know the authentic source of this much-used quotation? I have seen it attributed to Dr Johnson, Voltaire and Ambrose Bierce, but I cannot find anyone who gives a source for any of these. The "poor at math" version is typically attributed to Bierce, but it is not in the Devil's Dictionary. Seglea (talk) 11:52, 29 October 2016 (UTC)

Good question. I don't know the answer, but the idea seems to go back at least to the early 19th century. Job Roberts Tyson wrote something similar in A Brief Survey of the great extent and evil tendencies of the Lottery System, as existing in the United States (1833 pamphlet): "It is the grossest solecism, and for the purposes of artifice, to call the lottery a tax, while it is a contrivance for raising revenue out of the credulity, the weaknesses, and the vicious propensities of the lower classes of the people." Friends are God's way of apologizing for your family.

Google says Tennessee Williams, Wayne W. Dyer (doubtful), Similar: Jay McInerney, The Last of the Savages: “The capacity for friendship is God's way of apologizing for our families.” or Friends are God's apology for relations from Hugh Kingsmill. Even "Unknown". Good to have a page to sort this out.

“You think of yourselves as humans searching for a spiritual awakening, when in fact you are spiritual beings attempting to cope with a human awakening. Seeing yourselves from the perspective of the spirit within will help you to remember why you came here and what you came here to do.” ~The Group

what is "the group"? Certain it's a ripoff of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, " We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." anyone have any more info?

"In politics there is no gratitude"

This is a widely used cliché in political journalism, but I can find no source. All an internet search throws up that might be relevant is a line in a miscellany article in a 19th century newspaper (https://newspaperarchive.com/spirit-lake-beacon-apr-23-1886-p-1/), where the remark is attributed to a "Mr Blaine", which I guess means James G. Blaine. Can anyone trace it?
